There has been growing discontent among the Emirates fans, with many disappointed with his performances.

This came to a head last weekend when he

Many supporters did not want him to become skipper but he was selected after a vote among the players.

The writing was on the wall for the £38.25million signing when Josh Kroenke, co-owner Stan Kroenke’s son and club chief executive backed the fans in the dispute.

After Wednesday’s Carabao Cup defeat to Liverpool, Emery said: “Granit Xhaka? Now I cannot say how we are going to play on Saturday. We have to take it step by step.

“I think we can again speak about the same, we are in the first step after his mistake. Now is for him to recover as a person.”

Xhaka was jeered by Gunners fans after he was subbed against Palace.

He appeared to tell a group of fans to “f*** off”.

The Swiss midfielder, 27, then cupped his ear to the fans, tore off his shirt and marched straight down the players’ tunnel.

Former Basel academy team-mate Patrik Dibrani told Swiss publication Blick: “I spoke on the phone to Granit after the game. He’s not in a good place – he is grief-stricken.

“He regretted his actions straight away. He is an emotional person.”
