The Roman Emperor Claudius II was fighting many wars, he wanted a strong Army, but many men did not want to become soldiers, Claudius thought.
The men wanted to stay with their wives and children instead of leaving to fight wars Claudius thought about awful solutions to his problems. He decided to cancel all marriages. As a result, no one could get married in all Roman countries.
Claudius thought that if the men could not get married, they would have ignore the women and wants to become soldiers.
Valentine who was a Priest believed that women needed to get marry. He thought if they were not married, they would sin by living together. So, in secrecy and illegally couples anyway, he performed the wedding in secret places, so the Romans would not found out. But did found out as a result Valentine was questioned and brought before the Emperor. He was sent to prison until he could be executed.
While he was in prison, he sent out letters to his friends and asked them to be praying for him. Remember Valentine.
Valentine was killed on 14th or 24th of February in the year 269 or 270. We celebrate Valentine day on every 14th of February in honor of St. Valentine.
